Brazil Travel - The Magnificence of Iguazu Falls

By Matthew Barker

Iguazu Falls is surreal and a worthwhile destination for your Brazil travel. Declared a World Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO, the waterfalls are a magnificent sight and upon arriving it is clear why it's a must-see attraction during your Brazil vacations. The falls expand a breadth four times longer than Niagara Falls, which it is often compared too, though some of the cataracts are higher. The name of the falls, Iguazu, is derived from the Guarani expression, "great waterfall." The falls stretch for 1.68 miles (2.7 kilometers) with 275 waterfalls in all.
The location for these spectacular falls is in the middle of a dense lush jungle within bi-national Iguazu National Park. The thundering waters create a mist which envelopes all visitors making for out-worldly experience combined with the splendor of colorful rainbows appearing in the spray. Travelers can get very close to the falls from the Argentina side of the park; however the best panoramic views are seen from Brazil.
There are a number of activities one can do while in the Iguazu National Park. On the Brazilian side people can enjoy the best panoramic views the falls have to offer. The best spot to see the falls is from the Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat) where one can truly appreciate the magnificence of the falls amidst the billowing mist and rainbows. It's truly a magic experience.
For nature lovers there is Parque das Aves, which translates to Bird Park, located at the entrance. The park encompasses 12 acres where one can see and photograph exotic birds and butterflies. Macaws, flamingos, toucans and parrots are among the tropical birds one will see upon entering the park. The animals are in spacious cages enough to give them allow them to fly as if they were in their natural environment. Some enclosures are large enough to allow visitors to enter and really get close to the birds. The bird area is a perfect complement to this already beautiful park.
Travelers can get to the falls from two towns, Puerto Iguazu from Argentina or Foz do Iguaçu from Brazil. The best time to visit Iguazu is usually March, August, and September during the low travel season. The months are also dry and the prices to enter are lower. Though, anytime of the year is good for Iguazu with December being the one exception where you may get rained.
Should one find themselves in Brazil they should definitely make time to visit one of the world's most beautiful natural sites. Many years ago Eleanor Roosevelt came to Iguazu Falls. After seeing it she exclaimed, "Poor Niagara!" The grandeur of the waterfalls is awe-inspiring.
